STEM Focus- Technology

Week 2 of studying the four main points of STEM. This week, Technology!

Technology is seen in many different ways. Some people see it as awesome, some people see it as a nuisance. It can be used in many different ways. Some people never think that their laptops and iPods and Blackberries are products of Technology, while other people are obsessed with using computers to solve problems and improve their lives. But what is technology?

Technology is the usage and knowledge of tools, techniques, crafts, systems or methods of organization in order to solve a problem or create an artistic perspective. The word technology comes from the Greek technología (τεχνολογία) — téchnē (τέχνη), an "art", "skill" or "craft" and -logía (-λογία), the study of something, or the branch of knowledge of a discipline. The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include construction technologymedical technologyinformation technology, or high technology. (Wikipedia)

Technology is useful in making our lives easier by providing faster, safer and better ways to do ordinary jobs. Things such as cooking food, mowing the lawn, making clothes, and transportation have all been imporved by technology. But technology does not just make things easier for us. Technology has allowed humanity to achieve remarkable accomplishments in a very small amount of time. After centuries of humans trying to fly, the Wright brothers invented and flew the first powered airplane. Less then 25 years later, humans had the technology to set off an atomic bomb, and less then 25 years later, humans had landed on the moon! And recently, we celebrated the completion of the International Space Station. The ISS is a huge technological advancement that combines the work of multiple countries to put humans in an orbital habitat. We now have astronauts living and working in space, where less then 100 years ago, such a thing was an impossible dream!

Technology continues to help us today by advancing our lives and providing us with the means of exploring science and its mysteries.

STEM Focus- Science

For the next 4 weeks, (including today), I will blog about each of the STEM subjects.

This week's focus, Science :)

Science has been described as "the exploration of the universe and its contents", and this is a very accurate statement. Science enlightens us to the laws of nature and physics, teaching us new perspectives and ideas about how everything in creation fits in. Science is also important because we, as humans, are born with a natural curiosity about the world around us. Science satisfies this curiosity as it teaches us about our universe.

Science is considered controversial in many forms, primarily in the old "Creation versus Evolution" argument, setting scientific theory against Biblical teaching. I just want to say, if you believe that there must be a firm line between these two, the Bible is God's Word, science is God's Creation, therefore, it is impossible for the two to contradict. Any seeming contradiction is due to our own lack of understanding.

Science takes many forms. The main sciences are:
Astronomy, studying the universe
Physics, understanding the laws of science and how they attribute to us
Chemistry, the study of how atoms and molecules react to each other
Biology, the study of life
Geology, the study of the Earth

Each science can be broken down and specialized, and sciences can also be combined. For example, Astrobiology is the study of life in space, Astrophysics is specializing in the laws of physics in space, Astronomical Volcanology is the study of volcanoes in space, etc, etc. There is no sharp line defining sciences, as each science is connected to each other in its goals (learning) and studies (the universe).

Welcome to the Anything STEM Blog!

Hi! You might be here because you like space, or you might be here because I told you to come here. Either way, Welcome to my new Anything STEM Blog! Here I will blog about anything STEM related with the goal of educating the general public about NASA and how it fits into our lives. The STEM subjects, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, are the fundamentals to a career with NASA. There are other things, such as scuba diving, but I'll blog about that later. If you're here because you are a creepy stalker, just leave, because nothing about myself will be posted. This is entirely STEM related, get used to it. ;)
